I had my clubs shortened by 1/4 inch yesterday and played with them today (on a range and on a course). I have to so that it's made a big difference to the feel of the club.

I was fitted last year for the Pings but was borderline between +.5 and +.25 so went for the slightly longer. Now they're shorter they feel so much easier to control with less weight in the butt end, and I feel I can swing them even faster now.

I didn't expect such a big difference.

Eh timmy, if you swing em any faster maybe they'll wrap round your own neck and stop this nonsense once and for all. Fingers crossed eh. ;)

So I take it now you're hitting your SW at least 200yards to within 3 inches. :D

Nope...the shorter they are the slower the swing, it's a fact...unless your name is....

That's dependent on where you grip. The club head speed is related to the grip point on the shaft, not the shaft length. Any shaft above the grip (butt end) is dead weight and actually slows the swing because it counteracts the centrifugal forces at the head end.

When in a comfortable setup position the body would be inclined at a certain angle and the grip would be in a certain position on the shaft. If the shaft is too long there will be excess shaft at the butt end. Now shorten the shaft, grip it in exactly the same position (in relation to the club head) and you now have a club with exactly the same effective shaft length but lighter and more controllable.

Question is why did you do it?

Did you get a check done with a pro and tape on the base etc and find it was too long or just as an experiment?

If it was just an experiment it seems fairly extreme when you could grip down slightly to get the same effect.

Being a tall guy myself my clubs need extending from the normal fit and having replaced then recently I let a mate have my old set - he is gripping down a bit and finds them far superior to the last set - this could be because they are just better irons (earlier TM burners). He is hitting longer and straighter with them.

I was already choking down 1/4 inch on the grip, and it just felt a little cumbersome with the extra butt sticking out. I discussed it with my club fitter who agreed, for all the reasons quoted.
