After playing this season with a boxed starter set of clubs, the mrs has agreed to let me completely kit myself out with some decent gear provided I stay off the fags. I have booked myself in next week for a CF. The only clubs I have tried are R9 irons and R9 supertri. The irons felt awsome and so did the driver but I would prefer one of last years drivers as they are much cheaper. They also have an offer on for R9 tp 3-pw £450 which seems cheap. What other clubs should I be considering and what do I need to be aware of as I have never had a custom fit.

Budget £1100
Clubs wanted: Driver, 3 wood, hybrid 3/4-pw Vokeys and a Scotty and hopefully a new tour bag if I have enough left which I doubt!
Handicap: 12
Shot type: draw

Try as much kit as you can preferably at a shop with a range and not in a bay. Don't rush in and buy the 1st set cos there a good deal.

Most of all enjoy trying all the gear. ;)

my advice? get more money or get last years models for everything because i find it difficult to imagine money stretching that far. i bought some new woods and wedges recently and they cost the wrong side of 600 euro. i might be wrong about the money given that equipment costs so much more in ireland than everywhere else but i would still reconsider the shopping list and go for what you really feel you need most. also if i could go so far as to suggest maybe thinking different brands than titleist for wedges and putter? i personally wish i had gone for taylormade xft wegdes since they have the potential to be so much cheaper than anything else in the long run and there are plenty of putter brands that are just as good as scottys but cost much less (eg. rife, nike, snake eyes) but if you are dead set on both then fair enough, its your money at the end of the day and no-one can tell you how to spend it

I know what you are saying but I just love the look of the Scottys but I may change my mind when I see the bill building! but I am dead set on the Vokeys!

As has been stated, find a good place with a range and possible fit centre. Try lots of diff stuff, and makes and maybe try it over several different days. Then shop around for the best prices.
I would go for
Nike Machspeed driver £150
Ping i15 3 wood £150
not sure about hybrid, prob tm £120?
4-pw nike split cavity £400 (poss look at split set with 7-pw vr blades)
TM xft wedges £210 (52,56,60)
Odyssey white hot xg hawk £50
no bag, but £20 left toward one! lol

Just seen your reply to somone else mate, I would try the vokeys before buying, I have 2 and would swap them both for z groove tm's. I love my 56deg tm i just swing it so much better. Also look at other options than scotty, unless you play fast greens, the scotty may not be the best option, you may find a putter that really suits thats a ping or rife, dont just look at sc, as there are other opts :)

Instead of Vokeys look at the Cleveland CG12 or CG14 which are awesome wedges and will be reduced quite considerably as they are a few years old now.

I play with the TM R9 irons and absolutely love them.

I am a 10 handicapper and have tried virtually every type of iron set !!!!!

One thing I do suggest is try not to put the extra pressure on your self with any of the tour irons as they are great when you are playing well but a nightmare when you are slightly off your game.

I'd split your budget something like this:

Driver £300
Irons £500
Bag £100
Gap Wedge £80
and utility club £120
Which leaves a putter, a 3 wood/extra utility and another wedge or two.

If you are willing and can find the right clubs second hand you will save a lot and then may be able to get everything in one go but the above is a good start. Simply don't tell the Missus the full story and get the rest through next season when you have a bit of spare cash :D

£1100
That's a 1 hour lesson once a month, every month from now until May :D
Seriously, I would get good second hand stuff, a new bag and treat the misus to a nice slap up meal.
Think of the brownie points. :)

Yeah I think Im gonna have to get some stuff next year when shes not looking! I dont wanna spend £300 on a driver though! I think I could do without a utility for the mo, I have a 3h and 4h in my current set anyway. I think the scotty will have to be dropped, for the time been anyway.

Where is the best place to buy second hand? I really dont trust flea bay with golf equipment. Also how much is the usuall charge for CF when you dont buy the gear from them?

Good going to get to 12 with a boxed starter set. With that sort of money to spend you should be able to get a good set of custom fitted clubs. Have a look at the new Mizuno irons.
