    Season reflection and Winter Plans

Reasonably decent season for me, although didnt get in as many qualifier rounds (only 9) as I'd hoped. Started at 18, now down to 16 - target was to get to 15 but hoping I might manage a supplementary or two before season really finishes up. While it's not really reflected in the scoring, feel...

I am the only one getting worse

It won't be as bad as you think. It's important to access what's good and what's bad. What are you consistently doing poorly? Is it your drives? Iron play? Chipping? Are you slicing or hooking? The worst thing in golf IMO is being emotional and thinking everything has gone to sh*t. Look at your...

Paul Casey, is he too negative?

I don't think it helps that commentators and interviewers have been pointing out his round 4 stats all week. He was probably already under a lot of pressure, sign-posting that he might be a bottler doesn't exactly make it any easier. I'll never be in their position but I'd feel under more...

Asked NOT to mark ball near hole

To be honest, I'd be lifting my ball and walking in to report incident to Rules Committee/Secretary. That is a shocking state of affairs.

How often per round do you pull the chief

Last year would have had driver out on 12/13 holes whereas this year, that's probably nearer 9/10. Trying to be a bit more conservative and play for position this year. There are some holes where gaining an extra 30 yards isnt that beneficial but a miss is pretty penal.

    Mental Issues

IMO, it depends on the underlying emotional reaction. Is it anger and if so, angry for what reason - just playing a bad shot, or screwing your gross score for your round? Is it panic, fearing that it's a contagion affecting your entire game? Talking from experience, not so long ago, I used to...

How far do I need to be able to hit it?

Thanks for posting those stats Dan - very interesting. Quite surprised at them. I think I might be too hard on myself!

How far do I need to be able to hit it?

You are hitting them roughly the same distance as me (aside from driver which as EZprophet says, looks suspiciously like your technique or club needs some attention) and while Im not single figures, Im 100% sure it's not distance that's stopping you or me from getting to single figures. Start...

Phone as a GPS/distance measuring device

Had recently looked at both Hole 19 and Game Golf, and opted for the latter. Havent been out on course to try it yet. Anyone tried both and have a recommendation?

Is there a way for SSS to be assessed?

We rarely see CSS drop below SSS but can occasionally see it increase by one if the wind blows a bit. Im not sure what effect increasing SSS has since all that really matters is how the entire field play - increasing SSS by one stroke has same net effect for all players and as such, you might...

Are you playing to win / compete or making up the numbers? Pessimistic?

In order of importance: - Strike the ball well - Show consistency - Buffer - Get cut - To win In short, Im not really in it to win. Im in it to get better, enjoy my golf and if I win anything, it's a bonus. I obviously want a cut too but when I start out, my first objective is to try and...

Against the spirit of the game?

Aye, fair enough. Im just pointing out that there was some influence from a caddie/coach and it's unfair to be laying into a 16 year old for lacking the experience/maturity to deal with such a situation.

Against the spirit of the game?

Bizarre watching so many people get upset about what is and isnt a concession. You hole out until you are clearly told otherwise. I would never, ever question someone's decision to make me putt out even a short putt - I'd question anyone's competitive spirit if they conceded everything and...

    Drop rules

As others have said, you've taken the penalty. Beyond that, as long as you stay within the rules, everything else is personal opinion. I think the problem is that people see the rules as being solely penal - there to penalise you when you do something wrong when in fact, they outline the process...

    Speed of play

What about following, which builds on "ready golf" initiative: 1. Players are timed from the last stroke from teeing area (ie: clock is started when all players have played their stroke/any provisional). 2. Players play their ball when they are ready to play (but etiquette dictates players...
